What happened 2008
2008 - It has been an exciting year, a lot has happened in politics, music, economics, entertainment and science that will go to history as milestones and affect humanity for a long time to come. It will furthermore be impossible to cover all events, news and occurrences of 2008! World Politics were marked by wars, crisis and lots of hope set by the election of Barack Obama to US President in November. The financial global crisis hit us in autumn.
Sharm had a good year, tourism is booming. The following events marked our last year here.
January
Sharm started the year with the Camel Race in Wadi Zoweila.
30.1. Egypt had been unplugged from the world. Due to a cable cut most of Egypt had no internet for 3 days.
February
Virgin opening at Mercato. Long expected.
Bread crisis in Egypt.
March
Street Market at La Strada
April
The High School Musical took off on April 18 in Nabq, and Sharm’s young musical stars received well-deserved standing ovations.
French Consul and long time Sharmer Pierre Banoub died in a tragic car accident.
May
Gemini Party... the party of the year..
World Economic Forum was held in Sharm.
June
Metro opened another branch in Nabq.
Many old time Sharmers with older kids left due to the lack of an appropriate school in Sharm.
African Union Summit end of June.
July
Not only Sharmers but the world were watching the Olympics
August
New traffic laws were the city talk of the month.
September

6th AIDA Team Freediving World Championships September 11
October
October 29, 30 and 31 in Fustat Wadi El Gemal National Park, a beautiful untouched, well preserved valley, 45 km south of Marsa Allam, a special event, The Characters of Egypt, took place.
November
Avex Air Show 5-8 November
The world watched the elections of Barak Obama in the US.
December
Eid el Adha, Christmas... time of the feasts.
Grand Opening of Soho Square on December 10.
Ostraka Exhibition opened on December 20.
